Possible highlights:

Two deserts in one journey:

The red dunes of the Kalahari and the ancient Namib — two deserts with nothing in common.

Handpicked guest farms:

Owner-run houses rather than roadside hotels, chosen for character rather than star ratings.

Quiver Trees and Giant’s Playground:

Centuries-old quiver trees among strange dolerite boulders.

The Fish River Canyon:

The second largest canyon on earth, with viewpoints right on the rim.

Lüderitz and the Sperrgebiet:

Colonial facades on the Atlantic and ghost towns you can only enter on a special permit.

Sossusvlei in the best light:

The world’s highest dunes at the hour when the colour turns.

NamibRand or Naukluft:

Wide red dune wilderness or the folded mountains — depending on your accommodation category.

Desert dwellers close up:

Chances of Oryx, Springbok, Bat-eared Fox, African Penguins and rare desert birds.

Swakopmund:

Atlantic air and colonial charm after days in the open.

Our own reserve:

On request, a stay on the 22,000 hectares of the LeafLove nature reserve.

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed – but we know the places and times that offer the best chances.

Description:

The south is the old South West — and you drive it yourself. Fifteen days through a vastness where you stop the car now and then for no particular reason: from the deep crimson dunes of the Kalahari into the ancient Namib.

You stay on owner-run guest farms and in small, carefully chosen houses. That is deliberate: in the evening you sit at the table with people who have spent their lives here. It brings you closer to a country than any sight ever could.

Along the way the route is shaped by ancient camelthorn trees, striking quiver trees, the Tiras Mountains and the Fish River Canyon. What stays with most travellers is how plants, reptiles and insects have adapted to this harshness — and with luck you meet Oryx, Springbok, Bat-eared Fox, African Penguins and rare desert birds.

A special permit takes you into the Sperrgebiet with its ghost towns. At Sossusvlei you stand there at the hour when the light turns the world’s highest dunes. Depending on the accommodation category, views over the NamibRand or the folded Naukluft mountains come with it — and on request a stay on our own 22,000-hectare nature reserve.

Dinner, overnight stay & Breakfast

The Khomas Highlands, Where Your Safari Begins

Distance: about 60 km
Driving time: about 1 h 15 min

After your arrival at the airport, you will be met and transferred by private shuttle to the rental vehicle depot. There you will receive a comprehensive vehicle handover, together with all important information regarding the vehicle, insurance, and your journey.

Afterwards, you may either drive directly to your first lodge just outside Windhoek or, if you prefer, spend some time in the city to do your shopping, exchange money, or take care of any last errands before your safari begins.

Long driving distances are not recommended after an overnight flight. For this reason, your first lodge is only a short drive away, making for a relaxed and comfortable start to your Namibian adventure.

Take time to unwind, enjoy your first nature walks, relax by the pool, and ease into the rhythm of Namibia.

Day 2

  • 1 overnight stay at a carefully selected, high quality lodge with its own private nature reserve, set amidst the rolling linear dunes of the Kalahari.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay & Breakfast
  • 1 guided game drive through the linear dunes of the Kalahari. Alongside the spectacular scenery and rich birdlife, you have excellent opportunities to observe a wide variety of wildlife.

The Rolling Red Dunes of the Kalahari

Distance: about 290 km

Driving time: about 5 h

Leaving Windhoek behind, the vast landscapes of the Kalahari unfold before you. Rolling orange red dunes, ancient camelthorn acacias, and enormous Sociable Weaver nests define this remarkable wilderness. With a little luck, you may already spot Cape Ground Squirrels or even a Cape Cobra, which is occasionally seen searching the weavers’ nests for food.

Your lodge is beautifully situated amongst the dunes and has its own private nature reserve. During the afternoon, you may wish to join a guided game drive in search of giraffes, a variety of antelope species, and the unique flora and fauna that make the Kalahari so special.

The following morning, a walk through the dunes is highly recommended. The soft sand reveals countless tracks left by the night’s wildlife, while the golden morning light creates perfect conditions for nature observation and memorable photography.

Day 3

  • 1 overnight stay at a charming, family run guesthouse in Keetmanshoop, offering a warm and personal atmosphere.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay & Breakfast

Quiver Trees in the Realm of Dolerite Giants

Distance: about 315 km
Driving time: about 5 h

Few landscapes in Namibia are as intriguing as the Giant’s Playground. Towering dolerite boulders appear to have been piled upon one another by giants, creating a surreal maze of balancing rocks, hidden passages, and dramatic viewpoints. Silence, vast open spaces, and extraordinary geological formations define this remarkable place, while local folklore adds an air of mystery. Stories are still told of a giant serpent said to swallow sheep and of the Tokoloshe, a mischievous spirit believed to wander these hills after dark.

Just beyond lies the iconic Quiver Tree Forest, where centuries old quiver trees rise gracefully amongst the giant dolerite blocks. The contrast between the smooth golden trunks and the dark volcanic rock creates one of Namibia’s most photogenic landscapes, particularly in the soft light of sunrise and sunset. Rock Agamas bask on the warm stones, Rock Hyraxes dart between the boulders, and photographers will find endless opportunities to capture the timeless beauty of this extraordinary place.

Days 4 & 5

  • 2 overnight stays at a secluded, high quality lodge east of the Fish River Canyon, nestled within the spectacular landscapes of southern Namibia.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay & Breakfast

Fish River Canyon, Spectacular Viewpoints and Endless Vistas

Distance: about 170 km
Driving time: about 3 h

The Fish River Canyon is one of Africa’s greatest geological spectacles. Its immense depth, dramatic cliffs, deeply sculpted valleys, and striking rock formations reveal millions of years of geological history, creating a landscape of breathtaking scale and beauty. It is little wonder that explorers, geologists, and travellers have long been drawn to this extraordinary natural wonder.

The surrounding semi desert is equally captivating. Brilliant red aloes, elegant yet highly poisonous euphorbias, remarkably well camouflaged stone grasshoppers, and the ever changing light create endless opportunities for nature lovers and photographers alike. As one young boy famously remarked when asked the way to the canyon, “Something terrible must have happened to the earth here a very long time ago.”

Take time to explore the canyon at your own pace, enjoying short walks and visiting its various viewpoints, each offering a different perspective on this vast wilderness. As the light changes throughout the day, the colours and textures of the canyon transform dramatically, rewarding those who linger with unforgettable views and exceptional photographic opportunities.

Days 6 & 7

  • 2 nights in stylish and comfortable rooms in the heart of Lüderitz, overlooking the bay and historic harbour.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay & Breakfast

Optional Activities Around Lüderitz

Lüderitz is one of Africa’s most historic and fascinating towns. Simply exploring its charming streets, visiting the ghost town of Kolmanskop, Diaz Point or Shark Island offers remarkable insights into the region’s colourful past. For those wishing to venture further afield, several exceptional excursions reveal an even more remote and spectacular side of southern Namibia.

Bogenfels, Full Day Excursion

A journey into the former diamond restricted area, now part of Tsau //Khaeb National Park, is one of Namibia’s most extraordinary experiences. You visit the almost untouched ghost town of Pomona, where abandoned buildings still tell the story of the diamond boom of the colonial era.

The highlight of the day is the magnificent Bogenfels, one of Africa’s largest natural rock arches. Towering cliffs, powerful Atlantic surf, rich birdlife and often large colonies of Cape Fur Seals make this expedition an unforgettable adventure through one of Namibia’s most pristine and remote desert landscapes.

Boat Cruise to Halifax Island

Just off the coast of Lüderitz lies Halifax Island, home to one of the few remaining breeding colonies of the endangered African Penguin. With a little luck, you may also encounter playful Heaviside’s Dolphins along the way.

The cool Atlantic breeze, dramatic coastal scenery and fascinating marine wildlife make this a wonderfully refreshing excursion. Bird enthusiasts can also look forward to a variety of pelagic seabirds that are rarely seen elsewhere along Namibia’s coastline.

The “Half Human”, the Endless Namib and Lüderitz

Distance: about 395 km
Driving time: about 6 h 45 min

Sometimes the journey itself becomes the highlight. Rather than following the direct road to Lüderitz, your route traces the Orange River towards the Atlantic Ocean, one of the most scenic drives in all of Namibia. The narrow ribbon of lush vegetation along the river forms a striking contrast to the vast surrounding stone desert. Here grows the extraordinary Halfmens (Pachypodium namaquanum), one of Namibia’s most iconic desert plants, while the seemingly barren landscape reveals an astonishing diversity of hardy flora and surprisingly abundant smaller wildlife.

The drive is accompanied by immense open landscapes, softly coloured mountain ranges, and reminders of Namibia’s German colonial past. A stop at Haalenberg rewards those with an interest in unusual desert plants and the remains of historic military fortifications. Equally memorable is the story of Herr Kolmann, who, having become hopelessly lost in the seemingly endless wilderness, shot his oxen in despair, only to discover Lüderitz Bay shortly afterwards. The nearby diamond settlement of Kolmanskop would later become one of Africa’s most famous ghost towns.

Beyond the rugged gneiss hills, the colourful harbour town of Lüderitz finally comes into view. Its remarkable blend of dramatic coastal scenery, German colonial architecture, and the fascinating history of the diamond boom makes this one of the most rewarding and memorable regions in southern Namibia.

Day 8

  • 1 night at a rustic yet exceptionally charming lodge in a remote setting, where the individual bungalows are nestled amongst impressive granite outcrops. Each bungalow offers spectacular views across the surrounding landscape.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay & Breakfast

Wild Horses and Untouched Desert Landscapes

Distance: about 125 km

Driving time: about 2 h

With only a short drive ahead, there is ample time to enjoy a relaxed morning in Lüderitz before continuing eastwards across the vast Namib Desert towards the escarpment. The route leads through ever changing desert scenery to a beautifully situated lodge, surrounded by the striking granite landscapes of the Great Escarpment, where peace, space, and magnificent views await.

One of the highlights along the way is a visit to the legendary Wild Horses of the Namib. Their true origin remains one of Namibia’s enduring mysteries. Most historians believe they are descendants of horses that escaped during the German colonial era and the turmoil of the First World War. Whatever their story, watching these resilient animals survive in one of the world’s harshest environments is an unforgettable experience. With a little patience and good fortune, you may even witness the spectacular sight of two stallions confronting one another in a dramatic display of strength and dominance.

After arriving at your lodge, there is plenty of time to relax, take a gentle walk, and savour the remarkable scenery of southern Namibia as the afternoon light transforms the surrounding mountains into shades of gold and crimson.

Days 9 & 10

Walk a Little Further, See a Little More….

  • 2 overnight stays at a beautifully managed guest farm at Bullsport, the gateway to the Naukluft Mountains.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay & Breakfast

Please note:

The hikes in the Naukluft Mountains can be quite demanding. However, the lodge offers a variety of activities suitable for all fitness levels. If you prefer not to hike, we are happy to arrange a scenic mountain drive instead.

The Rugged Naukluft Mountains

Distance: about 430 km
Driving time: about 7 h 45 min

The Naukluft Mountains rank amongst Namibia’s most remarkable geological treasures. The celebrated German geologist Hans Cloos described this spectacular fold mountain range in his classic work Conversation with the Earth as one of the country’s most fascinating landscapes. Towering dolomite cliffs, ancient tuff formations, and an immense granite foundation reveal a geological history that stretches back hundreds of millions of years.

Those who take the time to explore the area are rewarded with an unexpectedly rich mountain ecosystem. Quiver Trees, Elephant’s Foot, Wonderbos, and the striking Bushman’s Candle thrive amongst the rugged slopes, while Hartmann’s Mountain Zebras, Greater Kudus, and Rock Hyraxes are frequently encountered. Along the crystal clear mountain streams, shady fig trees attract Rosy faced Lovebirds, and the cool water provides a welcome place to pause while admiring the colourful butterflies, waxbills, and countless smaller wonders of this remarkable landscape.

For us, the Naukluft Mountains remain one of Namibia’s most beautiful and underrated natural treasures, a place where geology, wildlife, and tranquillity combine to create an unforgettable experience.

Days 9 & 10

… there is life in these dunes!

  • 2 overnight stays at an exclusive lodge in the heart of the NamibRand Nature Reserve, surrounded by the magnificent red dunes and pristine desert wilderness.

inclusive:

  • Full Board
  • Ecologically responsible game drives in open safari vehicles, led by highly knowledgeable guides through the spectacular dune valleys of the NamibRand Nature Reserve.

Wolwedans, The NamibRand Nature Reserve

Distance: about 250 km

Driving time: about 6 h

Towering red dunes and golden grass valleys stretch to the horizon in one of Namibia’s most breathtaking landscapes. Covering more than 200,000 hectares, the NamibRand Nature Reserve is one of Africa’s largest private conservation areas and, in our opinion, the most spectacular part of the Namib Desert.

Between towering inselbergs, ribbons of orange red dunes wind through seemingly endless valleys, while thousands of mysterious fairy circles dot the golden grasslands. Exceptional lodges, genuine Namibian hospitality, and an overwhelming sense of peace make this a place where many travellers wish they had stayed longer.

The reserve supports healthy populations of Oryx, Springbok, and Plains Zebra. With a little luck, you may also encounter Spotted Hyenas, Bat Eared Foxes, African Wildcats, or even the elusive Leopard. Yet some of the reserve’s greatest treasures are much smaller. Fog basking beetles, the legendary Dancing White Lady spider, scorpions, dung beetles, and tiny desert gerbils reveal just how rich life can be in one of the world’s oldest deserts.

We rarely make bold claims, but this is one we happily stand by: anyone who has not experienced the NamibRand Nature Reserve has yet to discover what may well be the most beautiful and captivating corner of the Namib Desert.

Recommended: A Hot Air Balloon Flight Over the Namib

Some experiences simply belong on every travel wish list. Weather permitting, as strong winds can occasionally prevent flights, Namib Sky launches its hot air balloons from the gravel plains of the Tsauchab Valley between the towering dunes and the distant Huns Mountains.

As you silently drift above the desert, breathtaking views unfold across an endless sea of dunes, rugged mountain ranges and the spectacular interplay of colours that makes the Namib so unique in the soft light of dawn.

After landing, the experience concludes with a traditional champagne breakfast served in the heart of the desert. Including the early morning transfer before sunrise, the approximately one hour flight and the leisurely breakfast, this unforgettable excursion occupies most of the morning. We therefore recommend adding an extra overnight stay if you would like to include this exceptional experience, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the rest of your day’s programme.

Days 11 & 12

Where the World’s Highest Star Dunes Rise

  • 1 overnight stay at a high quality lodge within the Namib Naukluft National Park. Enjoy the exclusive privilege of entering the dunes before sunrise, allowing you to experience Sossusvlei in the magical early morning light, long before most other visitors arrive.

  • 1 overnight stay at a high quality lodge set amidst the spectacular landscapes of the western escarpment of the Namib Desert.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay & Breakfast

The Iconic Dunes of Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon

Distance: about 215 km
Driving time: about 4 h

An early start is richly rewarded as the first rays of sunlight transform the towering dunes of Sossusvlei into glowing shades of crimson and gold. These magnificent dunes, among the highest on Earth, were formed when advancing sands blocked the ancient Tsauchab River on its journey towards the Atlantic, creating the famous clay pan of Sossusvlei. Surrounded by centuries old camelthorn trees, resilient !Nara plants, and an endless sea of star and crescent dunes, this is one of Africa’s most iconic and unforgettable landscapes.

For those willing to climb one of the towering dunes, the reward is an extraordinary panoramic view across the vast Namib Desert, where waves of red sand stretch to every horizon. On the return journey, the nearby Sesriem Canyon offers a striking contrast. Over countless millennia, the Tsauchab River carved this narrow gorge deep into the rock, creating a cool and sheltered oasis. Its unusual name dates back to the days of the ox wagons, when six leather thongs had to be tied together to lower a bucket into the canyon to reach the precious water below.

Days 13 & 14

  • 2 overnight stays at a carefully selected, charming guesthouse in Swakopmund, personally chosen for its character, comfort, and warm hospitality.

inclusive:

  • overnight stay & Breakfast

not inclusive:

  • Dinner is at your own leisure. Swakopmund offers an excellent selection of restaurants, and we are happy to recommend our favourites and reserve a table for you. Fresh seafood and locally caught fish are naturally among the highlights, but those craving traditional German cuisine will also find excellent roast pork and many other regional specialities.

Optional activities around Swakopmund:

Living Desert / Little Five Tour:

The best-known activity around Swakopmund. Discover the Namib’s remarkable small creatures and how they’ve adapted to one of the most extreme landscapes on Earth.

Swakop Fatbike Tours:

Explore the dunes on specially designed fatbikes – the wide tires make riding through the sand surprisingly easy and offer a fresh perspective on the desert.

Scenic Flights over the Namib:

An unforgettable experience over the dunes to Sossusvlei or along the Skeleton Coast. We particularly recommend the two- to two-and-a-half-hour flight.

Historical Walking Tour:

A guided walk with a true Swakopmund local – history, background stories, and little-known secrets of the town, straight from the source.

Walvis Bay – Catamaran Cruise:

About 30 km south lies Walvis Bay, home to an 11,000-hectare lagoon and an important wetland. During the cruise, you’ll encounter flamingos, pelicans, seals, dolphins, and, with luck, whales or sunfish – topped off with fresh oysters and a glass of sparkling wine.

Walvis Bay – Kayak Tour:

For a more immersive nature experience: paddle the lagoon and get within a few meters of curious seals, enjoying the tranquility of this unique coastal landscape from a whole new perspective.

Swakopmund, where the Desert Meets the Ocean

Distance: about 235 km
Driving time: about 4 h 30 min

The immense gravel plains of the Namib stretch endlessly towards the horizon, interrupted only by distant mountains shimmering in the desert heat. Long, seemingly endless roads disappear into the vastness, inviting travellers to press on. We prefer a different approach. Rather than following the most direct route, we recommend a series of rewarding detours through sculpted granite landscapes, ancient erosion valleys, and dry riverbeds that reveal a far richer side of the Namib. In this remarkable silence, it is not uncommon to encounter giraffes, zebras, antelope, and, with a little luck, even a cheetah.

A worthwhile stop is the secluded cave once used by the German geologists Henno Martin and Hermann Korn during the Second World War, whose extraordinary story is told in the book The Sheltering Desert. A short walk is required, so sturdy walking shoes are well worth bringing along.

Along the way, you will encounter the legendary Welwitschia mirabilis, some specimens believed to be well over a thousand years old, extensive lichen fields sustained by the coastal fog, and the deeply eroded valley of the Swakop River, better known as the Moon Landscape.

By afternoon, the refreshing Atlantic air announces your arrival in Swakopmund, Namibia’s charming seaside town. Its relaxed atmosphere invites you to wander at leisure, enjoy a coffee at one of the excellent independent cafés, browse local galleries and craft shops, or simply stroll along the waterfront. If the weather is kind, there is even the opportunity to spend some time on the beach.

Swakopmund is also home to one of Namibia’s finest privately run museums, an impressive crystal gallery, an acclaimed craft gin distillery, excellent restaurants, and a thriving community of artists and artisans. Many visitors quickly discover that one night is simply not enough.

Day 15

… outbound…

Homeward Bound, Time to Say Goodbye…

Distance: about 390 km
Driving time: about 6 h 30 min

All too soon, it is time to bid farewell to Namibia. A comfortable drive on well maintained roads brings you back to Windhoek, with enough time along the way for a final coffee, a little souvenir shopping, or a few last errands before your journey comes to an end.

After returning your rental vehicle, a private transfer will take you comfortably to the airport or, should you wish to extend your stay, to one of our carefully selected lodges in or around Windhoek.

Kalahari “down under”:

More Time to Experience the Wildlife of the Kalahari?

  • 1 night at a lodge near the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Namibia
    Dinner, overnight accommodation and breakfast

  • 2 nights at a wilderness lodge inside the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa
    Full board and guided activities

  • 1 night at a lodge south of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa
    Dinner, overnight accommodation and breakfast

Deep into the Heart of the Kalahari

Drive through the acacia savannah of Namibia’s central plateau before entering the magnificent landscapes of the southern Kalahari, where endless red linear dunes, ancient camelthorn trees, and vast open valleys create one of Africa’s most distinctive wilderness areas.

The dry Auob and Nossob riverbeds have long been the lifelines of the Kalahari, drawing remarkable concentrations of wildlife. Antelope are abundant, while cheetahs, lions, and leopards are regularly encountered. The famous black maned Kalahari lions are among the region’s greatest highlights, and few wildlife experiences rival the sight of these magnificent predators against the glowing red dunes.

The Kalahari also offers exceptional birdlife and countless smaller natural wonders. Whether it is a Cape Cobra in a camelthorn tree, a Brants’ Whistling Rat scurrying across the sand, or a fearless Honey Badger, every drive rewards those who take their time. An optional guided night drive offers the chance to discover the fascinating nocturnal wildlife of the Kalahari, including aardvarks, genets, African Wildcats, springhares, and porcupines.

A Journey Through Earth’s Geological History

  • 2 nights at the spectacularly situated Fish River Lodge, perched on the remote western rim of the Fish River Canyon.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay and breakfast
  • A guided sundowner drive in an open safari vehicle to several spectacular viewpoints on the afternoon of your arrival.
  • A drive down into the Canyon: “This exhilarating descent deep into the canyon is both thrilling and completely safe. We are the only lodge with exclusive 4×4 access into the heart of the Fish River Canyon.”

Fish River Canyon… The Untouched Western Rim

The drive to Fish River Lodge is an experience in itself. Far from Namibia’s main tourist routes, the road winds through an ever changing landscape of dark dolerite outcrops, sculptured rock formations, and magnificent quiver trees that stand like silent sentinels across the hillsides.

Without warning, the vastness of the Fish River Canyon unfolds before you. Perched on the eastern rim, the lodge enjoys one of the finest panoramic views of the entire canyon. Quiver trees frame the dramatic cliffs, creating an unforgettable scene and a paradise for photographers.

One of the highlights is the lodge’s guided canyon excursion, which descends deep into the gorge. Travelling layer by layer through millions of years of Earth’s history, the changing colours, rock formations, and immense geological forces that shaped this landscape become wonderfully tangible.

Nature lovers will also be rewarded. Long tailed Eremomelas are often seen amongst the euphorbias, while the unmistakable calls of the Ludwig’s Bustard carry across the silence. It is this remarkable blend of spectacular geology, extraordinary desert flora, and rewarding birdlife that makes the eastern side of the Fish River Canyon one of Namibia’s true hidden gems.

The Namib, a Gem for Simply Being and Walking

…peace and tranquillity

  • 1 night at a small guest farm / lodge amid the Tiras Mountains, where we are looked after personally.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay & Breakfast

Namtib Farm, Hidden Among the Tiras Mountains

One of the most scenic drives in southern Namibia leads through the remarkable landscapes of the Tiras Mountains. Rising like islands from an ocean of red dunes and golden grasslands, these rugged peaks create a landscape of extraordinary beauty that delights both nature lovers and photographers alike.

Your overnight stop is the charming Namtib Guest Farm, where genuine Namibian hospitality meets breathtaking scenery and absolute tranquillity. It is no coincidence that the farm’s motto is: “I have arrived. This is Namibia.”

Those wishing to stretch their legs will find one of the region’s finest walks in the Ghost Tree Gorge. Surrounded by fascinating desert flora, a surprising diversity of birdlife, and magnificent views across the Tiras Mountains, it is a wonderful way to experience this remarkable landscape on foot.

Duwisib Castle & Life on a Working Namibian Farm

Few places in Namibia combine history, character, and genuine hospitality quite like Duwisib. At first glance, the castle seems almost impossible, a medieval fortress rising from the desert. Often described as “the castle built by a mad baron,” its true story is far more captivating. Once you discover the remarkable life of Baron Hans Heinrich von Wolf, this extraordinary landmark becomes one of Namibia’s most fascinating historical treasures.

Just a short drive away, Duwisib Guest Farm offers an authentic glimpse into life on a working Namibian farm. Rolene and Christian Frank Schultz are passionate hosts who warmly welcome visitors into their world, sharing stories of farming in the semi desert, the challenges of life in southern Namibia, and the traditions that continue to shape this remarkable landscape. It is a place of genuine hospitality, wonderful conversations, and the kind of atmosphere that makes it surprisingly difficult to leave.

Farm Nomtsas & the LeafLove Wilderness Reserve

For four generations, this traditional family farm has belonged to the Voigts von Schütz family. Ecological farming practices, a deep respect for nature, and a genuine love for Namibia’s rugged semi desert define this very special place. As a guest of LeafLove Safari, you enjoy exclusive access to the farm, allowing you to explore its remarkable landscapes in complete peace and privacy.

Early mornings and late afternoons are best spent on leisurely farm drives or guided walks through the striking red sandstone hills, where green ribbons of vegetation follow the dry riverbeds. Giraffes and antelope are regularly encountered, while bird enthusiasts search for Sclater’s Lark, botanists admire the remarkable Hoodia, geologists discover limonite cubes, and photographers wait for the perfect moment as the setting sun disappears behind a giraffe on the horizon. There is time for everything.

LeafLove Safari also manages a wilderness area of approximately 22,000 hectares on the property, where several shallow dams have been created to enhance wildlife habitat. Following good rains, these wetlands attract an impressive variety of waterbirds and savanna species, making the area a rewarding destination for birdwatchers, photographers, and anyone who enjoys experiencing nature at its own pace.

Frequently asked questions about the Southern Highlights self-drive

When is the best time to travel through southern Namibia?

Southern Namibia is truly captivating with its vast open spaces and stunningly colourful landscapes. After the seasonal rains — usually falling in January, February, and March — even the driest parts of the southwest come to life. Wildflowers bloom, the land is awash in vibrant colours, and the air feels fresh and clear. This makes March, April, and May particularly beautiful months to explore the south.

If you’re also hoping for rewarding wildlife sightings in the Kalahari or Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the best months are typically late July through September and into early October. This is also a great time to travel, as the Namibian autumn brings gentle light and comfortable temperatures — though it’s also a slightly more popular time for visitors.

The months from October to February tend to be very hot, which many travellers find less ideal for the south. In contrast, June and July can be surprisingly cold, especially at night — something worth keeping in mind when planning your journey.

We are quite certain that you too will fall in love with Namibia. That is why we recommend not trying to see the entire country in one trip, but rather planning two or three journeys, each focusing on a different region in depth.

The south is what many describe as the “real Southwest,” the part so often spoken of with deep admiration. The vast open spaces, the dramatic landscapes, fascinating geology, unique plant life, and desert-adapted wildlife all come together to create an unforgettable experience — you will love it!

Yes, we are very happy to rearrange this itinerary, as there are quite a few guest farms in the south of Namibia. You could stay with us on the farm for a few days as a self-caterer… please enquire if this is possible on your date.

The idea is excellent as we, LeafLove Safari, have a vehicle depot in Swakopmund and you escape the time-consuming hustle and bustle of the capital.

We would be happy to customise the trip for you!

In a time when flight bookings are just a few clicks away, it may seem old-fashioned to involve a travel agent. But when it comes to navigating the ever-changing world of air travel—delays, reroutes, strikes, cancellations, and the charming surprise of “you no longer have a seat”—working with a real human still has very real advantages when unexpected challenges arise, such as:

  • Delays and last-minute flight changes

  • Strikes or changes made by the airline

  • Seat changes without prior notification

  • The need to rebook during your trip

Especially in those moments—just imagine being on safari while these changes occur—it is incredibly helpful to have a reliable contact person who handles everything quickly and professionally.

Our Recommendation:

Even if booking flights through a travel agency may seem slightly more expensive, it is absolutely worth the investment. The service, support, and peace of mind it provides, particularly in problematic situations, are priceless.

We’ve had consistently excellent experiences with the following agencies – they are professional, fast, and reliable.

Important:

Please make sure to always mention that you are booking through LeafLove Safari / Albert Voigts.

This is the only way we can ensure that all flight times are accurately recorded and that we can coordinate with the agents to perfectly align the itinerary with your travel plans – e.g. for organizing transfers, airport greetings, or handling last-minute changes.
