Your adventure begins on the Central Plateau, where you will visit a renowned wildlife sanctuary. Here, you can observe and photograph Africa’s majestic big cats amidst breathtaking landscapes.
The remarkable contrast between the arid semi-desert regions of the western and eastern Etosha National Park and the water-abundant dry forests, tidal flats, and rivers of the Okavango, Kwando, Chobe, and Zambezi in the Caprivi Strip reveals a range of different habitats. This diversity supports an array of wildlife and plant species, offering an unparalleled experience that few other regions in Africa can match.

Itinerary

Days 1 & 2

Arrival and drive into a wildlife-rich nature reserve
Leopards, cheetahs, porcupines, and—most notably—brown hyenas and white rhinos await within the reserve. The AfriCat Foundation has established a vast sanctuary that offers exceptional wildlife viewing and a wealth of conservation insight.

5 additional days Desert Fauna in Damaraland?

Dry riverbeds and desert wildlife in western Namibia
The dry rivers Awa-Huab, Uniab, and Mudorib cut through Namibia’s rugged desert landscapes, where Ana trees nourish desert-adapted elephants. Wildlife sightings, ranging from Hartmann's mountain zebras and antelopes to giraffes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and elephants, are rewarding but require patience, experience, and a bit of luck. This journey also includes visits to the petrified forest, the famous rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, as well as the Burnt Mountain and the striking basalt formations of the Organ Pipes. Birdlife includes bare-cheeked babblers, pygmy falcons, and African scops owls.
Night safaris reveal aardvarks, porcupines, genets, bat-eared foxes, and springhares.

Days 3 & 4

The “Great White Place” – Etosha National Park
Etosha National Park spans over 22,000 km², making it one of Africa’s most wildlife-rich reserves. Its vast salt clay pan, covering more than 4,000 km², feeds artesian springs along the southern edge—known as “contact springs.” These vital water sources attract a high density of wildlife, offering excellent viewing opportunities throughout the year.

Days 5 & 6

Unique wildlife encounters in Etosha
The vividly colored Etosha agama and the elegant blue cranes capture our attention, along with the iconic Makalani palms and the tiny, ever-alert Dik-dik. With wildlife unbothered by vehicles, the park offers outstanding opportunities for game viewing and photography.

Days 7 & 8

Two nights on the Panhandle of the Okavango Delta
Stay at a lodge near Bwabwata Nature Reserve, set directly on the banks of the Okavango River. Elephants, lechwe, waterbuck, and reedbuck are frequent visitors to the riverbanks. The majestic African Fish Eagle, with its unmistakable call and striking silhouette, is a daily highlight not to be missed.

Additional days for ornithologists, birders & photographers:

Okavango Panhandle – Garden birding and rare encounters
Even within the garden itself, the Amethyst Sunbird, Red-billed Firefinch, White-browed Scrub-Robin, Meyer’s Parrots, and the striking Narina Trogon may be seen. Keep your hopes high; this is the realm of the elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl, and we’ll do our utmost to track down this extraordinary bird!

Days 9 & 10

The Kwando–Linyanti–Liambezi river basin
This dynamic alluvial system is defined by broad reed belts, scattered lagoons, and sweeping floodplains that line the course of the river. On the west bank, the Bwabwata National Park—featuring the legendary Horseshoe Bend—hosts a rich diversity of wildlife and offers an authentic wilderness experience.

Additional Days at Linyanti?

Nkasa Rupara National Park – the “Namibian Okavango Delta”
Pure wilderness deep in the African bush… This remote landscape offers raw, untamed nature and the thrill of tracking lions resting on termite mounds in one of Namibia’s most untouched regions.

Additional days in Chobe National Park?

Unforgettable wildlife encounters in Chobe National Park
The unforgettable experience of observing wildlife in the pristine Chobe National Park makes it a premier destination for nature lovers. Particularly noteworthy are the rare African wild dogs, also known as “Painted Dogs,” and the critically endangered Southern Ground Hornbill.

Extension Khwai; Savuti & Moremi National Park Botswana?

The Khwai region – a jewel of the Okavango Delta
The Khwai region in the Okavango Delta is a true jewel of Africa, celebrated for its spectacular landscapes and rich wildlife, making it a genuine biodiversity hotspot. Visitors can observe elephants, giraffes, buffalo, various antelope species, and frequently predators such as leopards and lions—sometimes even in the midst of a hunt.

Days 11 & 12

The Chobe River – where four countries meet
Nestled in the far northeast of Namibia, the Chobe River forms a natural border with Zambia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.

...or opt for the fabulously beautiful houseboat experience?
As you drift along the riverbanks, you’ll encounter herds of elephants—some even taking a leisurely swim—offering magical moments and perfect photo opportunities.

Day 13

Victoria Falls – a spectacle of mist and forest
A constant misty rain surrounds the Victoria Falls, nurturing a lush rainforest of Cape figs, ferns, water pears, and towering baobab trees along the dramatic riverbank.
David Livingstone famously described the Victoria Falls as “a sight angels must have gazed upon,” capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of this natural wonder.

Day 14

Flights and logistics in Africa
Many flights depart from Victoria Falls Airport, providing travellers with a range of destination options and convenient onward connections across Africa and beyond.
Detailed itinerary

  • Our team at Leaflove Safari will efficiently manage and oversee the vehicle handover, including insurance logistics.

  • You’ll receive your vouchers, maps, a detailed route description, and, of course, a warm welcome package.

  • Additionally, you’ll equip you with a GPS device featuring pre-programmed routes in the ‘Tracks 4 Africa’ system!

Days 1 & 2

  • 2 nights at one of the Africat Lodges. All lodges here are comfortable and tastefully decorated.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay, and breakfast
  • 2x game drive in open game vehicle guided by well trained rangers.

natural:

Plains Camp is designed for “regular tourists” and happens to be the largest accommodation provided by the Africat Foundation. While it maintains a high standard, it can also host larger groups.

classic:

The Bushcamp is one of Namibia’s premier lodges, offering luxurious accommodations in an authentic natural setting. Here, you’ll enjoy a high-end experience with personalized attention and a deep connection to the surrounding wilderness.

luxury:

The African Villa is a dream come true, it doesn’t get any better! This highly unique lodge is located in its own private game reserve and offers a wealth of fantastic wildlife sightings. We witnessed a mud battle of rhinos at the waterhole, saw brown hyenas quenching their thirst during dinner, and there’s an evening guarantee of spotting porcupines… all-inclusive, of course.

Cheetahs, Leopards & Brown Hyenas

267 km – approx. 3,5 hours driving time

After your arrival at the international airport, the journey begins immediately as you head to the central north, towards the red-hued Etjo mountain and hill formations amidst the dense acacia savannah.
Here, the fungus termite impresses with mounds up to 5 meters high. Road signs warn of greater kudu and warthogs, while steenbok curiously stand by the roadside.

In a vast game reserve, you will experience your first game drive, hoping to spot not only various antelope species but also white rhinoceroses, giraffes, and possibly even predators such as brown hyenas, jackals, and African wildcats.

This is the exclusive domain of the Africat Foundation, dedicated to the preservation of African cats. Here, you can virtually count on a successful encounter with wild leopards, and the chance to observe other magnificent felines like cheetahs.
Porcupines and intriguing antelope species, such as the crown duiker, are frequently spotted. The landscape, adorned with expansive red termite mounds in vast plains, is exceptionally picturesque. Notably, the awe-inspiring sight of the incredibly rare brown hyena, protected within this sanctuary, can be a truly memorable experience.

5 additional days

Desert Fauna in Damaraland ?

in an untouched wilderness of the Namib

  • 2 nights amidst magnificent granite formations in a romantically designed tent chalet.
  • 1 night amidst the basalt-red Etendeka Table Mountain formation next to a lush spring.
  • 2 nights west of Etosha in Damaraland on the banks of the Mudorib dry river.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, overnight stay, and breakfast
  • Guided tour of the petroglyphs at Twyfelfontein
  • Guided (we know our way around) off-road game drives in the sandy dry riverbeds to search for desert elephants and other animals.

natural:

Near Awa-Huab at Twyfelfontein and at Uniab in the Etendeka Mountains, you will stay in safari-style tent chalets with private bathrooms that offer good comfort.

classic:

At Awa-Huab, you will enjoy premium tent chalets, while in the stunning Etendeka mountain landscape, you will stay in a comfort bungalow right on the banks of the Uniab dry river. For western Etosha, we have selected a well-regarded lodge.

luxury:

At Awa-Huab near Twyfelfontein, you can choose between staying at one of the most renowned lodges with fantastic views of the imposing granite landscape or at a high-quality wilderness lodge at Awa-Huab. At Uniab on the Etendeka Plateau and Mudorib in western Etosha, you will stay in comfort rooms as described in the classic version.

Desert-dwelling Elephant, the Giants of the Desert & Etosha West

Namibia’s wildlife has settled in the world’s oldest desert, known for its fascinating landscapes, endless expanses, and unique diversity. Here you can find rare plants, bizarre geology, endemic birds, desert elephants, black rhinos, and desert lions. However, finding these animals requires a lengthy search and overcoming thick sand.

The dry rivers Awa-Huab, Uniab, and Mudorib traverse the striking desert region in western Namibia. On their banks stand Ana trees, whose red pods are eaten by desert elephants.

Encountering wildlife in this “untouched” semi-desert is unforgettable, with Hartmann’s mountain zebras, numerous antelopes, giraffes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and even elephants moving through the area, although sightings require luck and experience.

The birdlife is also remarkable, with bare-cheeked babblers, pygmy falcons, and African scops owls even in the garden of the lodge.

A night safari at the lodge offers encounters with aardvarks, porcupines, genets, bat-eared foxes, and springhares.

“Roadside” Program:
Noteworthy are the 4000-6000 year old petroglyphs at Twyfelfontein, the “Burnt Mountain,” and the basalt “Organ Pipes.” About 200 million years ago, huge Cordaites trees were washed here from central Africa in mudflows and petrified due to a lack of oxygen, forming today’s fascinating geological formations.

Days 3 & 4

  • Two nights in the heart of Etosha, either in a high-quality private lodge outside the park offering a highly individual and exclusive wildlife experience, or in a semi state-run chalet located directly at the world-famous Okaukuejo waterhole.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

natural:

In the central area, all the private lodges tend to be quite large and bustling with tourists. However, since most of your time will be spent exploring the park itself, this aspect might not be a significant concern for many visitors.

classic:

Even within the classic accommodation segment, we deliberately prioritize tranquillity over mass tourism. The selected lodge offers a high level of comfort and features its own well frequented waterhole, allowing for intensive wildlife observation in a relaxed and personal atmosphere, seamlessly combining comfort with an authentic nature experience.

luxury:

For nature enthusiasts, and especially for nature photographers, it makes sense to design a safari in a way that minimises disturbance from other visitors. The lodges of the Etosha Heights Private Reserve are small and offer the highly individual standard we value. Wildlife density is comparable to that of Etosha National Park, with the added advantage of far more private and undisturbed observation opportunities.

A particular highlight is the superbly designed photographic hide, allowing wildlife to be photographed at eye level in a calm, unobtrusive setting, with time to observe and compose. Our wildlife photographers truly love this experience!

Locally guided or on my own?:

You can easily drive through the park with your rental car and observe animals at your own pace. However, the lodges also offer game drives in open safari vehicles, which provide the advantage of additional animal information and observations. The local guides are knowledgeable, and you’re likely to see more with their expertise.

Etosha National Park – West & Central

267 km – approx. 3,5 hours driving time

The “Great White Place,” Etosha National Park, spans over 22,000 km², making it one of Africa’s most wildlife-rich reserves. Spotting lions by the roadside or encountering herds of elephants is thrilling, but the vast landscape can be unforgiving, with wildlife enduring tough conditions. The park’s immense salt clay pan, covering over 4,000 km², creates artesian “contact springs” along the south bank. These oases are crucial gathering points for diverse game species, especially during dry and warm seasons, showcasing nature’s resilience and adaptability.

Days 5 & 6

  • 2 nights at a good lodge situated in the eastern area, directly adjacent to the park.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, Bed & Breakfast

natural:

In the eastern area, the private lodges are all of commendable quality. For your stay, we’ve selected a very good bush camp, which offers excellent value without compromising on comfort.

classic:

Our carefully selected accommodation places you within dry Terminalia woodland, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the natural landscape. We place great emphasis on choosing high quality lodges that seamlessly combine comfort with a close connection to nature.

luxury:

This tented camp combines an authentic safari atmosphere with a high level of comfort. Stylish tents, thoughtfully designed to open toward nature, are set within pristine bushland on the edge of the Etosha ecosystem. A waterhole directly in front of the camp allows for intimate wildlife viewing in a calm and unspoiled setting, particularly during the early morning and evening hours. An ideal retreat for nature lovers and photographers seeking close contact with the wilderness without compromising on quality.

Etosha National Park – East

180 km – approx. 8 hours driving time (through the park)

The Etosha agama and majestic blue cranes captivate your attention, along with the striking Makalani palms and diminutive Dik-dik. The region’s ever-changing flora adds to its remarkable biodiversity, offering encounters with a stunning variety of species, not just a multitude of animals.
The local wildlife, accustomed to vehicles, provides exceptional game viewing and photography opportunities. You’ll see various antelope species, including springbok, red hartebeest, wildebeest, steenbok, the rare black-faced impala, and the iconic oryx. Lions are frequently spotted, while leopards and cheetahs are more elusive. The rich ecosystem is also home to magnificent pachyderms like the rare black rhino, white rhino, and savannah elephants.

Days 7 & 8

  • 2 nights on the panhandle of the Okavango Delta, where you’ll find a lodge nestled near the Bwabwata Nature Reserve, offering a prime location right on the banks of the Okavango River.

inclusive:

  • Dinner, bed and breakfast
  • Boat cruise on the Okavango

natural & classic:

We’ve arranged accommodation at a quality lodge near the Mahango Core Area of Bwabwata National Park. This lodge provides excellent game drives, including access to the wildlife-rich Buffalo Core Area.

luxury:

For a luxurious experience, you’ll be staying at a high-end lodge with a spa, situated near the Popa Rapids. What sets this lodge apart is the opportunity for a boat ride that takes you right up to the rapids—an exclusive experience not offered at lodges further south.

The (O)Kavango

624 km – approx. 8 hours driving time

As we venture into the deep north-east, we embark on a journey into a region that could be straight out of an African picture book. The first glimpse of traditional Nyemba huts, the scent of smoke from Girigu campfires, and the occasional crossing of the road by chickens and cattle signify our entry into this captivating real-africa realm. Here, the vegetation becomes progressively lusher and denser, and before us, the Kavango (later known as the Okavango) unfolds its grandeur.
Though Mahango Park may not be vast, it is a sanctuary for rare species like the tsessebe, sable, and roan antelopes, alongside the more common giraffes. Elephants, lechwe, waterbuck, and reedbuck frequently grace the banks of the Okavango. The majestic African Fish Eagle with its distinctive call and striking appearance never fails to leave an impression.
As we navigate the sandy trails of Mahango West, we may encounter the unique Chapman Zebra subspecies and often spot small herds of buffalo. Our reliable vehicle enables us to explore the eastern bank of the Okavango, particularly the Buffalo Core Area. Here, massive herds of buffalo and elephants are a common sight. Our objective is also to spot the magnificent Wattled Cranes and, with luck, even the elusive African Snipe in the southern mudflats of this region.

As many animals as Chobe?

Although the wildlife density here is not as high as in Chobe National Park in Botswana, these two days could be omitted if necessary for logistical or cost considerations, providing an alternative to the more expensive lodges within Chobe National Park.

Nkasa Rupara Park

66 km – approx. 1 h driving time

If you’re familiar with the Okavango Delta, you might find it hard to believe you’re in a different place when you visit this wilderness. The Chobe, Linyanti, and Kwando rivers are interconnected in this expansive delta, and during rainy years, the entire landscape is flooded. This creates extremely fertile floodplains, where enormous termite mounds form tree-lined islands. Makalani palms, sausage trees, large ancestral trees, and vast grasslands provide abundant food for large herds of buffalo, elephants, zebras, and antelopes. Lion sightings are often possible here.
While the wildlife density may not be as high as in Chobe or the Okavango Delta itself, the sense of wilderness, with its stunning sunsets and distant lion roars, is just as authentic.
Visitors can also discover a small private museum nestled in the bush, where they can delve into the history of David Livingstone.

Botswana, a Country for Nature Lovers!

Botswana’s “high cost – low impact” tourism might be more expensive for our guests, but it provides uninterrupted wildlife experiences in well-protected wilderness.

Add these extra 2 to 5 days to your trip to enhance it significantly and elevate your experience!

2 – 3 additional days

If you’re especially interested in abundant wildlife—particularly mammals—July to November is the best time to visit. As the dry season progresses, animals concentrate around water sources, making sightings more frequent and dramatic.
For bird enthusiasts, February to May is a rewarding period, with numerous migratory species and peak breeding activity. However, during these greener months, larger mammals tend to be more scattered and less visible.

The risk of mosquito bites is very high in the months of January to May and you should definitely take precautions and protect yourself against mosquito bites. The months of June to November are hardly dangerous, but you should still protect yourself from mosquito bites and/or even take prophylaxis.

Plenty of self-drivers now take on the deep sand stretches of the Caprivi, and most make it through without incident—as long as they follow the basics: engage four-wheel drive correctly, avoid braking like it’s a street race, and give elephant herds the space they absolutely require.

That said, if the idea of navigating soft sand, sudden downpours, or spontaneous elephant roadblocks makes you uneasy (fair), we can absolutely plan a version of the trip that sticks to solid, reliable roads. We’ll also choose accommodations that are easier to access—no heroic off-roading required.

You’re still in the wild, just with fewer opportunities to accidentally become part of the food chain or call a tow truck via satellite phone.

In a time when flight bookings are just a few clicks away, it may seem old-fashioned to involve a travel agent. But when it comes to navigating the ever-changing world of air travel—delays, reroutes, strikes, cancellations, and the charming surprise of “you no longer have a seat”—working with a real human still has very real advantages when unexpected challenges arise, such as:

  • Delays and last-minute flight changes

  • Strikes or changes made by the airline

  • Seat changes without prior notification

  • The need to rebook during your trip

Especially in those moments—just imagine being on safari while these changes occur—it is incredibly helpful to have a reliable contact person who handles everything quickly and professionally.

Our Recommendation:

Even if booking flights through a travel agency may seem slightly more expensive, it is absolutely worth the investment. The service, support, and peace of mind it provides, particularly in problematic situations, are priceless.

We’ve had consistently excellent experiences with the following agencies – they are professional, fast, and reliable.

Important:

Please make sure to always mention that you are booking through Leaflove Safari / Albert Voigts.

This is the only way we can ensure that all flight times are accurately recorded and that we can coordinate with the agents to perfectly align the itinerary with your travel plans – e.g. for organizing transfers, airport greetings, or handling last-minute changes.
