As its name suggests, this journey is dedicated to the breathtaking landscapes of southern Namibia. You will stay on carefully selected guest farms and intimate lodges, each chosen for its character, charm and warm hospitality. More than simply travelling through Namibia, you will experience the country from the inside and gain genuine insight into the lives of its people.

Southern Namibia offers an astonishing diversity of landscapes, flora and wildlife. Endless crimson dunes of the Kalahari, ancient camelthorn trees, enormous Sociable Weaver nests, striking Quiver Trees, the dramatic granite outcrops of the Tiras Mountains and the magnificent Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon on Earth, all await you. Along the way you may encounter Gemsbok (Oryx), Springbok, Bat-eared Foxes, African Penguins and an impressive variety of desert adapted birdlife.

With a special permit, we also venture into the legendary Sperrgebiet, where remote ghost towns from the diamond mining era are slowly being reclaimed by the desert. No journey through southern Namibia would be complete without Sossusvlei, where we visit the world’s highest dunes at precisely the right time of day, when the changing light transforms the landscape into an unforgettable spectacle of colour.

Day 1

Arriving in the Heart of Namibia
Your journey begins at a relaxed pace upon arrival in Namibia. Enjoy your first impressions of Windhoek before unwinding at a beautiful lodge nestled in the acacia savannah. With a little luck, your very first Namibian wildlife sightings may already await you.

Day 2

The Crimson Dunes of the Kalahari
The deep crimson dunes of the Kalahari are among southern Africa's most captivating landscapes. Ancient camelthorn trees, enormous Sociable Weaver nests and an astonishing diversity of wildlife combine to create an unforgettable introduction to Namibia's remarkable natural heritage.

Quiver Trees & Dolerite Wonders
Among ancient Quiver Trees and extraordinary dolerite boulder formations lies one of Namibia's most photogenic landscapes. Giant's Playground captivates with its remarkable geology, unique desert flora and endless opportunities for spectacular photography.

The Majestic Fish River Canyon

The Wild Horses of the Namib
Travelling through some of Namibia's most spectacular desert landscapes, you may be fortunate enough to encounter the legendary Wild Horses of the Namib. Rare succulent plants, magnificent desert panoramas and an overnight stay at the unique Eagle's Nest Lodge make this a truly memorable day.

Day 1

Distance: about 60 km

After your long flight, the focus is simply on arriving, relaxing and easing into the rhythm of Namibia. Following a warm welcome at the airport, we make our way to Windhoek, where you have time to exchange money, pick up a few essentials or visit a pharmacy if needed. If time allows, we also enjoy a short introduction to Namibia’s charming capital.

From there, we continue to a welcoming lodge nestled in the acacia savanna of the Khomas Highlands. Unwind beside the pool, stretch your legs on a gentle walk through the surrounding bush, or, if you wish, set off on your very first game drive. As the African afternoon fades into evening, you may already encounter giraffe, antelope and other fascinating wildlife, a wonderful first glimpse of the unforgettable journey that lies ahead.

Day 2

The Rolling Red Dunes of the Kalahari

Distance: about 290 km

Driving time: about 3 h 45 min

The Kalahari captivates with its seemingly endless red sand dunes, ancient camelthorn acacias and enormous Sociable Weaver nests. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a true desert but a remarkably diverse savanna, rich in wildlife and fascinating adaptations.

In the morning, you explore its unique birdlife and smaller desert creatures. The fine sand reveals a fascinating world of tracks, while Cape Ground Squirrels and Meerkats forage nearby. Keep an eye out for the diminutive Pygmy Falcon, and with a little luck, even the elusive Cape Cobra.

During an afternoon game drive through the dune valleys, Oryx, Springbok, Greater Kudu and Giraffe are regular sightings. With a bit of luck, you may also encounter the charming Bat-eared Fox or other remarkable species specially adapted to life in this beautiful semi-desert landscape.

Day 3

Where Plants Become Works of Art

Quiver Trees and the Giants’ Playground

Distance: about 315 km

Few landscapes in Namibia are as intriguing as the Giant’s Playground, and we take time to explore this remarkable geological wonder together. Towering dolerite boulders appear to have been piled upon one another by giants, creating a surreal maze of balancing rocks, hidden passages, and dramatic viewpoints. Silence, vast open spaces, and extraordinary rock formations define this fascinating place, while local folklore adds an air of mystery. Stories are still told of a giant serpent said to swallow sheep and of the Tokoloshe, a mischievous spirit believed to wander these hills after dark.

From here, we continue to the iconic Quiver Tree Forest, where centuries old quiver trees rise gracefully amongst the giant dolerite boulders. The striking contrast between the smooth golden trunks and the dark volcanic rock creates one of Namibia’s most photogenic landscapes, especially in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon. As we wander through this extraordinary setting, Rock Agamas bask on the warm stones, Rock Hyraxes dart between the boulders, and there is ample time to enjoy the scenery, photograph the remarkable flora, and appreciate one of southern Africa’s most distinctive natural landscapes.

Fish River Canyon, Spectacular Viewpoints and Endless Vistas

Distance: about 170 km
Driving time: about 2 h 15 min

The Fish River Canyon is one of Africa’s greatest geological wonders. Towering cliffs, dramatic rock strata, deep erosion valleys and breathtaking views combine to create a landscape of extraordinary scale and beauty that has captivated explorers for generations.

The flora of this semi-desert is equally fascinating. Deep red aloes, striking yet highly poisonous euphorbias, perfectly camouflaged stone grasshoppers and the canyon’s remarkable light create an unforgettable atmosphere. As one young boy famously remarked when asked for directions to the canyon, “Something terrible must have happened to the earth here a very long time ago.”

Several of the canyon’s most impressive viewpoints are easily reached by vehicle, while leisurely walks along the rim provide wonderful opportunities to experience this extraordinary landscape up close. Along the way, we look out for Klipspringers, Rock Hyraxes, Verreaux’s Eagles, Mountain Zebras and colourful Rock Agamas, all of which are at home amongst these ancient cliffs.

Optional Activities Around Lüderitz

Lüderitz is one of Africa’s most historic and fascinating towns. Simply exploring its charming streets, visiting the ghost town of Kolmanskop, Diaz Point or Shark Island offers remarkable insights into the region’s colourful past. For those wishing to venture further afield, several exceptional excursions reveal an even more remote and spectacular side of southern Namibia.


Bogenfels, Full Day Excursion

A journey into the former diamond restricted area, now part of Tsau //Khaeb National Park, is one of Namibia’s most extraordinary experiences. You visit the almost untouched ghost town of Pomona, where abandoned buildings still tell the story of the diamond boom of the colonial era.

The highlight of the day is the magnificent Bogenfels, one of Africa’s largest natural rock arches. Towering cliffs, powerful Atlantic surf, rich birdlife and often large colonies of Cape Fur Seals make this expedition an unforgettable adventure through one of Namibia’s most pristine and remote desert landscapes.


Boat Cruise to Halifax Island

Just off the coast of Lüderitz lies Halifax Island, home to one of the few remaining breeding colonies of the endangered African Penguin. With a little luck, you may also encounter playful Heaviside’s Dolphins along the way.

The cool Atlantic breeze, dramatic coastal scenery and fascinating marine wildlife make this a wonderfully refreshing excursion. Bird enthusiasts can also look forward to a variety of pelagic seabirds that are rarely seen elsewhere along Namibia’s coastline.

The “Halfmens”, Endless Horizons and the Atlantic Coast

Distance: about 395 km
Driving time: about 5 h

Today, the journey itself is the highlight. Rather than taking the direct route to Lüderitz, we follow the Orange River all the way towards the Atlantic Ocean, travelling along one of Namibia’s most scenic and least travelled routes.

The lush green ribbon of the Orange River forms a striking contrast to the barren rocky desert beyond. Here grows the extraordinary Halfmens (Pachypodium namaquanum), a remarkable succulent surrounded by fascinating local legends. What may at first appear to be a lifeless landscape soon reveals an astonishing variety of smaller wildlife and highly specialised desert birds.

As we continue towards the coast, vast open landscapes, softly coloured rock formations and stories of the region’s early explorers and settlers accompany us along the way. Then, almost unexpectedly, the historic harbour town of Lüderitz emerges between the rugged granite hills. It is hard not to wonder how a community came to flourish in such a remote corner of the world. This unique combination of dramatic scenery, German colonial heritage and the legacy of the diamond boom makes this one of the most memorable journeys in southern Namibia.

Wild Desert Horses and Spectacular Desert Landscapes

Distance: about 125 km

Driving time: about 1 h 30 min

Today’s journey is pleasantly short, giving us time to discover a few more of Lüderitz’s highlights before travelling to the edge of the Great Escarpment. Tonight, we stay at a uniquely situated lodge surrounded by magnificent granite formations and some of the most breathtaking scenery in southern Namibia. In the afternoon, there is time for a scenic walk or simply to relax and enjoy the spectacular views.

Along the way, we visit the famous Wild Horses of the Namib. Their true origin remains one of Namibia’s enduring mysteries. Most historians believe they are descendants of horses from the German colonial era that survived the turmoil of the First World War. Whatever their history, watching these remarkable animals roam freely across the vast desert plains is an unforgettable experience. With a little luck, photographers may even witness two stallions battling for dominance, one of the Namib’s most iconic wildlife spectacles.

Hiking Through the Hidden Wonders of the Naukluft Mountains

The Naukluft Mountains are among Namibia’s most fascinating geological landscapes. Renowned geologist Hans Cloos, author of Conversation with the Earth, regarded this remarkable mountain range as one of the country’s greatest natural treasures. Its spectacular geology reveals ancient granite foundations overlain by massive dolomite cliffs and striking tufa formations, creating an extraordinary landscape shaped over millions of years.

To us at LeafLove Safari, the Naukluft remains one of Namibia’s best kept natural secrets. Every hike through its rugged gorges reveals something new, whether it is a rare bird, an unusual plant or another hidden wonder. Quiver Trees, Elephant’s Foot, Miracle Bush (Bushman’s Tea) and Bushman’s Candles are just a few of the remarkable plants you may photograph. Mountain Zebras, Greater Kudus and Rock Hyraxes often appear on the steep rocky slopes, while ancient fig trees attract colourful Rosy-faced Lovebirds. Crystal clear mountain springs invite you to cool your feet, as delicate butterflies and colourful waxbills add life to this remarkable wilderness.

Wolwedans, The NamibRand Nature Reserve

Distance: about 250 km

Driving time: about 4 h 30 min

Glowing red dunes and golden grass valleys stretching to every horizon, this is the magic of the NamibRand Nature Reserve. Covering more than 200,000 hectares, it is one of Africa’s largest private nature reserves and, in our opinion, the most spectacular part of the Namib Desert.

Visionary conservationist Stephan Brückner created a true paradise for nature lovers, combining exceptional hospitality with sustainable conservation, outstanding cuisine and beautifully integrated lodges. Towering inselbergs rise above endless valleys where waves of orange-red dunes meet thousands of mysterious fairy circles scattered across the golden grasslands. As one of our guests simply put it: “Absolutely breathtaking.”

The reserve supports healthy populations of Oryx, Springbok and Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra. Spotted Hyenas are regularly encountered, Bat-eared Foxes are common, African Wildcats are seen surprisingly often, and with a little luck you may even spot a Leopard. This remarkable diversity is a powerful reminder of an ecosystem that still exists in natural balance.

Equally fascinating is the reserve’s often overlooked world of smaller desert creatures. Those who take the time to look closely may discover the legendary Dancing White Lady spider, fog-basking beetles that harvest moisture directly from the morning mist, scorpions, dung beetles and agile desert gerbils. These tiny specialists are among the greatest wonders of the Namib and reveal just how extraordinary life can be in one of the world’s oldest deserts.

We say this with complete conviction: those who have not experienced the NamibRand Nature Reserve have not truly discovered the most beautiful and captivating side of the Namib Desert.

Recommended: A Hot Air Balloon Flight Over the Namib

Some experiences simply belong on every travel wish list. Weather permitting, as strong winds can occasionally prevent flights, Namib Sky launches its hot air balloons from the gravel plains of the Tsauchab Valley between the towering dunes and the distant Huns Mountains.

As you silently drift above the desert, breathtaking views unfold across an endless sea of dunes, rugged mountain ranges and the spectacular interplay of colours that makes the Namib so unique in the soft light of dawn.

After landing, the experience concludes with a traditional champagne breakfast served in the heart of the desert. Including the early morning transfer before sunrise, the approximately one hour flight and the leisurely breakfast, this unforgettable excursion occupies most of the morning. We therefore recommend adding an extra overnight stay if you would like to include this exceptional experience, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the rest of your day’s programme.

Sossusvlei, Towering Sand Dunes, Sesriem Canyon and Extraordinary Desert Landscapes

Distance: about 215 km
Driving time: about 3 h

The towering dunes of Sossusvlei, the highest sand dunes on Earth, are at their most spectacular in the soft light of early morning. Their ever-changing shades of red and orange create one of the world’s most unforgettable desert landscapes.

Over thousands of years, the Tsauchab River was blocked by migrating dunes before it could reach the Atlantic Ocean, forming the famous clay pan known as Sossusvlei. Surrounded by ancient Camelthorn trees, resilient !Nara plants and magnificent star-shaped and crescent dunes, this remarkable landscape has become one of Namibia’s most iconic natural wonders. Those who choose to climb one of the giant dunes are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across an endless sea of sand.

The Tsauchab River has also carved another geological masterpiece, the Sesriem Canyon. Early ox wagon drivers reportedly had to tie together six leather thongs (ses riem in Afrikaans) to draw water from the canyon, giving it the name by which it is known today. A short walk into the canyon reveals fascinating rock formations, ancient layers of sediment and a surprising oasis of life hidden beneath the desert surface.

About 30 km south lies Walvis Bay, home to an 11,000-hectare lagoon and an important wetland. During the cruise, you’ll encounter flamingos, pelicans, seals, dolphins, and, with luck, whales or sunfish – topped off with fresh oysters and a glass of sparkling wine.

Swakopmund, Where the Namib Meets the Atlantic

Driving time: about 3 h 15 min

Vast gravel plains stretch endlessly before us, interrupted only by distant mountains shimmering on the horizon. Long, straight roads disappear into the desert, occasionally crossed by swirling dust devils. Yet today, we deliberately leave the main route behind, exploring hidden granite landscapes, ancient erosion valleys and dry riverbeds that reveal a very different side of the Namib. Although this wilderness often appears devoid of life, we may encounter Giraffes, Zebras, various antelope species, desert birds and, with a great deal of luck, even a Cheetah.

We also visit the famous cave where two German geologists once found refuge during the Second World War, a remarkable story recounted in the book „Sheltering Desert“. Reaching the cave requires a short walk, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended.

Along the way, we discover the legendary Welwitschia mirabilis, a remarkable plant that can live for more than 1,500 years, extensive lichen fields and the spectacular erosion valley of the Swakop River, better known as the Moon Landscape.

Eventually we reach Swakopmund, Namibia’s charming seaside town where German colonial architecture meets the vast Atlantic Ocean. There is time to stroll through its relaxed streets, admire its historic buildings, enjoy a coffee in one of its excellent cafés or, on warmer days, even relax on the beach.

Private coffee roasteries, a renowned craft gin distillery and a vibrant community of local artists create an atmosphere that invites visitors to linger. Swakopmund is also home to one of Namibia’s finest private museums, an impressive crystal gallery and the sheltered bathing beach known locally as The Mole.

Today we make our way back to Windhoek along well maintained tar roads. While this final stretch is less dramatic in terms of scenery, it allows us to make good progress. Depending on your departure time, there may still be an opportunity to browse for authentic Namibian handicrafts or enjoy a light meal before continuing to the airport.

In the afternoon, we transfer you either to Windhoek International Airport or to one of our carefully selected accommodations, from where we are happy to assist with your onward travel arrangements.

Depart Today or Tomorrow?

Many flights to Europe depart during the evening or overnight, making it convenient for many guests to travel directly to the airport after the safari and check in during the afternoon.

Others prefer to spend a little more time exploring Windhoek or simply enjoy a relaxed final day without the pressure of an international departure. We are therefore happy to arrange an additional night either at a comfortable guesthouse in Windhoek or at a stylish lodge close to the airport.

If you wish to extend your adventure even further, we can also arrange tailor made extensions, such as a fly in safari to the Zambezi Region (formerly Caprivi), the Okavango Delta or a few unforgettable days in Cape Town.

Deep into the Heart of the Kalahari

Drive through the acacia savannah of Namibia’s central plateau before entering the diverse landscapes of the southern Kalahari, where endless linear dunes, ancient limestone ridges, vast salt pans, and magnificent camelthorn forests create one of Africa’s most distinctive wilderness areas.

The dry Auob and Nossob riverbeds were equipped with artificial waterholes during the colonial era. Over the decades, these have become natural gathering places for the region’s wildlife, attracting large numbers of antelope as well as predators such as cheetahs, lions, and leopards. The famous Kalahari lions are particularly impressive, renowned for their exceptional size and the dark manes of the males. Few wildlife experiences are as memorable as watching these magnificent animals against the backdrop of glowing red sand dunes.

The Kalahari is also a paradise for birds of prey. Raptors are abundant throughout the park, while antelope are encountered almost everywhere. Wildlife viewing here rewards patience rather than speed, every drive offers the possibility of an unforgettable sighting.

There is always something fascinating to discover in the Kalahari. It may be a Brants’ whistling rat darting across the sand, a Cape cobra resting in the branches of a camelthorn tree, or a fearless honey badger being pursued by a Pale Chanting Goshawk.

On locally guided night drives, you often have the opportunity to encounter some of the Kalahari’s elusive nocturnal wildlife, including aardvarks, genets, African wildcats, springhares, and porcupines.

When is the best time to travel through southern Namibia?

Southern Namibia is truly captivating with its vast open spaces and stunningly colourful landscapes. After the seasonal rains — usually falling in January, February, and March — even the driest parts of the southwest come to life. Wildflowers bloom, the land is awash in vibrant colours, and the air feels fresh and clear. This makes March, April, and May particularly beautiful months to explore the south.

If you’re also hoping for rewarding wildlife sightings in the Kalahari or Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the best months are typically late July through September and into early October. This is also a great time to travel, as the Namibian autumn brings gentle light and comfortable temperatures — though it’s also a slightly more popular time for visitors.

The months from October to February tend to be very hot, which many travellers find less ideal for the south. In contrast, June and July can be surprisingly cold, especially at night — something worth keeping in mind when planning your journey.

We are quite certain that you too will fall in love with Namibia. That is why we recommend not trying to see the entire country in one trip, but rather planning two or three journeys, each focusing on a different region in depth.

The south is what many describe as the “real Southwest,” the part so often spoken of with deep admiration. The vast open spaces, the dramatic landscapes, fascinating geology, unique plant life, and desert-adapted wildlife all come together to create an unforgettable experience — you will love it!
